Choosing shampoo and conditioner by hair type: a practical guide

Hair type and scalp condition are two separate questions, and mixing them up is the most common reason a new shampoo doesn't deliver.

Start by separating scalp condition from hair type, because they often don't match. It's entirely normal to have an oily scalp with dry, damaged ends — heat styling and colour treatments strip the mid-lengths and ends while the scalp keeps producing its usual amount of oil. In that case, a clarifying or balancing shampoo formulated for the roots paired with a rich conditioner applied only from mid-length down (never on the scalp) solves both problems without over-stripping or over-conditioning either area.

Fine hair carries less structural protein per strand and weighs down easily, so heavy conditioners and rich oils applied close to the roots leave it looking flat within hours. Lightweight, volumising formulas and conditioners applied only to the ends are the safer default. Thick or coarse hair has the opposite problem: it resists moisture penetration and often looks dry even when it isn't damaged, so it usually needs a more emollient shampoo and a leave-in conditioner or oil to manage frizz and ease detangling.

Curly and coily hair has a different oil distribution entirely — natural scalp oil struggles to travel down a curved hair shaft, so curls are structurally more prone to dryness regardless of scalp type. Sulphate-free, moisture-rich shampoos and a leave-in conditioner or curl cream are standard rather than optional here, and washing less frequently (every 2-4 days rather than daily) usually preserves both moisture and curl definition better.

Once the basics are right, treatments layer on top rather than replace shampoo and conditioner: a weekly deep-conditioning mask targets whichever area is driest (usually ends), a scalp scrub or clarifying wash every few weeks removes product buildup for oily scalps, and a leave-in heat protectant is worth using any time hot tools are involved, independent of hair type.

    What to look for

    • Treat scalp condition and hair-length condition as separate problems
    • Fine hair: lightweight formulas, condition ends only, avoid heavy oils near roots
    • Thick or coarse hair: richer shampoo, leave-in conditioner or oil for frizz control
    • Curly hair: sulphate-free, moisture-rich formulas and less frequent washing
    • Add a weekly mask for dry ends and a clarifying wash for buildup, on top of your regular routine
