Professional colouring comes down to two decisions: the type of colour and the strength of the developer. Permanent colour changes the hair pigment irreversibly and is used to cover grey hair and lighten. Demi-permanent colour works without ammonia or with a very low amount, fades gradually, and is the standard choice for toning, colour refreshing and adding shine between full colour services.
The developer choice shapes the result as much as the colour itself. 3% (10 vol) is used for toning and darkening, 6% (20 vol) is standard for covering grey at the same level, 9% (30 vol) gives roughly two levels of lift, and 12% (40 vol) is used only by experienced stylists. Always follow the manufacturer's mixing ratio and processing time — these differ between brands and lines.
