Small Office Networking Basics
The building blocks of a reliable small-office network, and how routers, switches and access points fit together.
A router, a switch and an access point do three different jobs, and confusing them leads to either overspending or a network that stalls under load. The router connects the office to the internet and typically handles firewall rules. A switch extends wired connections to more devices than the router's built-in ports allow — look at desk count, printers and any IP phones or cameras when sizing ports, and always leave a few spare rather than filling every port on day one. An access point (AP) provides Wi-Fi and is a separate device from the router in any office serving more than a handful of people, because router-integrated Wi-Fi radios are usually underpowered for real coverage and multiple simultaneous users.
PoE (Power over Ethernet) removes the need for a power outlet at every access point or camera location, since the network cable itself carries power from a PoE switch or injector. This matters most for ceiling-mounted access points and door cameras, where running a separate power cable is impractical. When comparing PoE switches, check the total power budget (in watts) against the combined draw of all connected devices, not just the number of PoE ports, since a switch can have enough ports but not enough power for all of them running at once.
Coverage in a small office is rarely solved by a single stronger router; it is solved by placing more than one access point and using wired Ethernet, not Wi-Fi repeaters, to connect them back to the switch. Wired backhaul keeps every access point running at full speed, whereas a chain of wireless repeaters loses bandwidth at each hop. For an office with more than one room or a floor with thick walls, plan cable runs to each AP location during any renovation or fit-out, since retrofitting cabling later is far more disruptive.
Finally, separate a guest network from the internal business network at the router or AP level. A guest network keeps visitor and personal devices off the same network segment as file servers, printers and business systems, reducing both security risk and accidental interference (like a guest device flooding the network with large downloads). Most business-grade routers and access points support this as a standard feature — it is one of the simplest security improvements available for a small office.
